The Humble Petition of Thomas William Pearce, Robert MacLean Gibson, and Ho Kai.

1. That Your Petitioner Thomas William Pearce is

resident the Senior Missionary of the London Missionary Society in this Colony; that Your Petitioner Robert Maclean Gibson is a Doctor of Medicine and for some years past has acted as kedical Superin- tendent of the Alice Memorial and Nethersole hospitals, both situate in the City of Victoria, Hongkong; that Your Fetitioner Ho Kai is a Barrister-at-Law and an Unofficial Member of the Legislative Council and is the Founder of the Alice Memorial Hospital aforesaid.

2. That the Alice Memorial Hospital was founded in the year 1887, as a free public hospital, to meet the want.of a large section of the Chinese Community, which was desirous of obtaining hestern Medical and Surgical advice and assistance, but who was too poor to pay for such assistance and advice and for the necessary medicine and surgical appliances. The said Hospital was established also as a training institute for native students and a short time after its foundation, the College of Medicine for Chinese was inaugurated and instructions in Western Medical science and practice, both clinically and by means of lectures, were and are still imparted within its walls.

That five years after the opening of the Alice Memorial Hospital it was found necessary to augment its accommodation, owing chiefly to the greatly increased number of out-door and in-door patients seeking admittance and the steadi- ly increasing number of students undergoing their professional training in its wards and lecture rooms. For this purpose the Nethersole Hospital was built by H. A. Davis, a former member of the local firm of Messieurs Linstead and Davis, and affiliated to the said Alice Memorial hospital in the year 1893.

4. That since the erection of the said Nether- sole Hospital and until recently the accommodation afforded by the
